Chapter fourteen
Abby
The day has finally come when I can get my prosthetic. Walking with crutches for nearly eleven weeks has been brutal. The hour-long drive from my house to the hospital Dawson works at is made worse by Frank's brooding in the driver's seat. He insisted on driving me to the appointment, and after our last argument, I thought it best to concede.
The freedom of being able to drive by myself has been exhilarating. Even if I don't go far, just getting out of that house helps. I can breathe easier knowing I have a way to get far from him if I need to. Not like I could really go far, he'd find me or ruin my career. Both weren't options for me. I know I need to get away from him. I'm taking that risk tomorrow.
I sit in the waiting room I've become familiar with. The ticking of the clock seems to echo all around me. Counting down the seconds until I get the key to my freedom. I scroll through emails on my phone, mad at myself for forgetting my book at home. I could really use the distraction right now. At least Frank stayed out in the truck this time and can't embarrass me again. When we got here, his phone rang and he said it was work. The door opens, and Dawson steps through. His face lights up when he sees me, that dazzling smile bringing out his dimples.
"Abby."
I follow him to the backroom and take my usual place at the table. There's a blanket bunched up on top. I set my bag beside me on the floor. The noises from the other workers drift over to us, but I can't take my eyes off his face. He wears a playful expression, and I love this side of him.
"Are you ready, sunshine?" With a grin from ear to ear, he grabs the edges of the red throw blanket.
I nod just before he lifts the blanket off what resembles a skinny version of a terminator's leg. I run my finger down the cold, smooth silver. I've waited so long for this. It doesn't look like much, but I knew this was what my first one would look like.
"It's beautiful."
Dawson tears open a package and holds the sock out to me. "Do you want me to put it on?"
"Sure." I slide forward on my seat as he kneels in front of me. At this level, we're face-to-face.
He glides the soft polypropylene up my leg slowly without pulling his eyes away from mine. My lips part on the exhale as his finger grazes the sensitive skin of my inner thigh. I watch the roll of his throat as he swallows and licks his lips.
"You're gonna get me fired," he whispers, glancing around the room.
"I'm not doing anything. You're the one touching me," I whisper back harshly.
"Well, stop reacting," he warns and steps away from me to position my leg. He angles my limb toward the prosthetic before asking, "You know what this means, right?"
I nod.
